We finally got to see the movie everyone is talking about. Last night we saw The Passion of The Christ with Joy, Scott, Christy and a bunch of people Joy and Scott know. As an added bonus, we got to see it at The Senator.
As everyone else in the world has been reviewing it and discussing it I guess I should too. I think I would have enjoyed it more without the subtitles(and without the people behind us talking through most of the movie)… but that might be because I know a little aramaic(major props to Paul Younan and the guys at Peshitta.org). I think Mel did the neccessary balancing act of trying to be historically accurate and following the catholic traditions. I was very impressed with the actors and actresses. It felt much more like watching a historic event than it did a movie, which says a lot for the whole cast. I wasn’t moved to tears like some people were. I wasn’t overwhelmed seeing Mary be so strong like some people were. See how demonic forces worked didn’t open my eyes of shock me like it did for some people. Maybe some of it was because I had heard other people talk about it, but there wasn’t anything I didn’t expect. I don’t think I am going to run back out and see it again, but I do expect to buy the DVD when it is released. Watching it will probably become a part of my yearly lent tradition. I am hoping they release a version without subtitles though, they were distracting to me. I’m also still processing it some and might write some more here as I finish processing.
Also check out a good review at Mark’s blog.
