The Connecting Church 5

Posted by Daniel on December 16, 2004

I’ve been reading The Connecting Church by Randy Frazee. I have been looking forward to reading this book since I read an interview he did with The Cutting Edge a few years back. But I have to tell you, as I’m just about done with the book, that I have been really disappointed in it. It is written to Willowcreek wannabe’s and I have been hitting some serious disconnect on a lot of it. And if I hear about the Christian Life Profile or the 7 steps of this or the 30 attributes of that anymore I’m gonna kill myself. If you were interested in reading it, don’t bother. Some good ideas but the presentation will drive you nuts.

    Daniel,
That book was hyped to the moon to me. When something is hyped that much to me, I nearly always end up being disappointed in it. My reaction was exactly the same as yours, feeling for feeling. I didn’t even finish it.

Well, I did just finish it. It didn’t get any better at the end. Now I need to read something good as a rebound. Probably A Generous Orthodoxy if I can fight Alicia for it.

I liked the book, relatively speaking. I had to set aside many of the Willow like aspects but I felt he had some good things to say. The follow-up book was better ( Making Room For Life ). There will still be things that set you off but it deals with hindrances to community, very practical. I’ve found it relevant to our own situation and we’re nothing like the standard sub-urban church.

Yeah, I agree with his points(Individualism, isolation and consumerism = bad… re-discovering community through shared purpose(missional?), neighbourhood and sharing = good), there is just a disconnect with the presentation. I feel like I got 99% of the good stuff from the book in the interview he did with The Cutting Edge a few years ago.

Yeah. We’d be as well off if most books were articles.
