New Dead Sea Scroll theory 2

Posted by Daniel on August 15, 2006

I’m a little bit of a archeology nerd, so ignore this post if you don’t care about it. But there is apparently a new theory about the origins of the Dead Sea Scrolls that I find interesting. As they dig around the site more they are finding evidence that it might have not been a monastery at all, but a pottery factory, and that the scrolls are not from a single sect(the Essenes) but were possibly taken from Jerusalem and hidden there by people fleeing the Romans. Check out the article here for the longer scoop.

Wow, now that is interesting… and makes some sense. Wondering, though, if they were Essenes that just made pottery as a trade? Who knows? I do hope we find out. Interesting stuff!

Docs say no link ‘tween Qumran, Essenes, and DSS!…

I never bought Roland de Vaux’s theories in the first place … and I owe it to the well reasoned argumentation of my Hebrew, OT Survey, and History of Ancient Israel profs at Talbot that I didn’t!…
