Scenic Williamsburg drive 2

Posted by Daniel on October 29, 2006

Today Alicia and I took the day and enjoyed the scenic Route 5 drive from Richmond to Williamsburg. Equipped with our Buzzy’s coffee we drove out of the city and were greeted with yellow’s, orange’s and red’s in the trees and a perfect blue with a couple of puffy little white clouds in the sky. It was a gorgeous day to take in the change of seasons. We made a slight detour to see Shirley Plantation along the way. We took in the sites of this beautiful old farm, enjoyed the feel of the wind coming off of the James while sitting on a bench under a 350 year old tree and took a couple pictures to share the beauty with you all:

Williamsburg was pretty as always but very crowded today as there seemed to be a William & Mary reunion going on. We got some lunch at The Cheese Shop and walked and drove around a little. Then it was back on the road to take in the sites again and enjoy some NPR on the way back to the urban jungle we call home.

It appears to be pretty close to peak time for the leaves, but next weekend should still be very pretty if you would like to enjoy the drive yourself. Our route(which I recommend) involved taking Main Street east from Shockoe Bottom and getting on Route 5 and sticking with it the whole way there. It made for a relaxing and enjoyable date.

Another one bites the dust 2

Following quickly on yesterday’s demolition… this house on our block is being torn down today. I heard noises when I got back from a meeting and then walked around back to find most of the house gone already. This is on the 600 block of N. 31st, across the street from us.

Noisy today 7

Everything a weekend can hold 1

After work yesterday we(Alicia and I) went shopping, looking for a dress for the party at Willow Lawn tonight. We headed to the suburbs because apparently that is where people can get dresses they like that don’t cost $400. Cary Town may be trendy and hip… and have stuff from local designers and not made by kids in sweatshops… but we are too poor for that. Alicia did end up finding a very pretty dress at The Dress Barn, which should really be called the pants-suit barn because there were like 3 dresses there. I played the loving husband, standing outside the dressing room waiting. The result, a perfectly lovely dress for $40. I guess that is worth the drive to the suburbs

On our way home we stopped by Walgreens because Alicia needed an energy drink. We had made plans to go out with some of her co-workers after 10, and that is normally our bedtime, so we needed energy. Alicia tells me we were the only white people in the Walgreens, but I guess we’ve lived in Church Hill long enough that I don’t even notice that anymore. Equipped with our energy drink we headed home to get ready.

We hit the town with her co-workers at like 10:30. After a couple of failed attempts to find a place to go we ended up at Easy Street in The Fan. It was really loud and the band was struggling, but we had fun none-the-less. Her co-workers are a lot of fun. We didn’t get to bed until 2.

Today holds lots of work for Alicia as they prepare for the party. My plans, since they told me I can’t help prepare for the party, are to do more dreaming of the plot for my novel and do some chores around the house. Tonight from 6-10 is the party. Be there or be square.

And I really have no idea what tomorrow holds… hopefully some reading, a walk and some warm apple cider. I love fall and want make sure I don’t miss the wonders of it this year. The brisk air, looking at the changing leaves, kicking through piles of downed leaves, tasting the fall flavors of pumkin and apple. What a great season!

Visit to a black church

Posted by Daniel on October 15, 2006

We walked over and made a visit to Asbury United Methodist Church On Church Hill this morning. It was an interesting mix between a traditional black church and a traditional United Methodist church. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming. It was about 95% black, so we weren’t the only white people and they have a desire to be an interracial congregation. On the negative… it was a 2 hour service and there was a lot of yelling. I don’t really have the ability to sit still and quiet for 2 hours. And Alicia doesn’t do well with raised voices and had a hard time with that part. So, chalk one up as a worthwhile experience, but we probably won’t be visiting there again.
