All day long in my news reading there have been basically propaganda pieces(like this) in favor of a bailout of the US automobile industry. Politicians and executives pointing fingers and saying “if you don’t do this it will be on your hands” and other stupid stuff like that. If GM fails the only people whose hands it is on is the execs at GM for leading a company that puts out crappy cars that no one wants to buy. I’m sorry to the people who will lose their jobs… but that is not a reason for everyone in this country to chip in and cover a private company that is burning through $5 billion(!!!!) a month.

It’s insane, Daniel. The “bailout” won’t even bail them out of the debt they have racked up. These companies need to shrink to begin to become profitable again.
Don’t forget to blame the unions too.

That sums it all up.
I actually don’t blame the unions… I’m not sure why. They organized and fought for their share of the profits when things were good. Good for them. I know the current labor contracts make it tough on the automakers to be flexible… but that is the price you pay for getting so large in the first place.
I can see two reasonable solutions… the first being to allow bankruptcy to force a drastic restructuring and the second being to give them a smaller bailout with the condition of splitting the company into smaller pieces. I’m sure some of those smaller companies would be able to survive(maybe even thrive?) as they will be able to be much more flexible. Of course that does mean a number(most?) of them would fail really quickly, which is good because many of their lines of cars are crap.
I dunno, man. The unions wanted to protect their jobs. The automakers couldn’t shrink without laying off workers. The automakers offered buyouts whenever possible.
I don’t like unions, I think they are a necessary evil. But in this case the autoworkers will probably get exactly what they fought for, jobs no company can afford to keep around.
Good luck to ‘em. Them people gonna be out on their ass.
